Hopewell Chapel Rain Plan: What Happens If It Rains on Your Wedding Day

If you're planning a wedding in Mississippi, you've probably checked the forecast more than once already, maybe months before your date. We understand. When couples visit Alvastage Acres, one of the first questions we hear is, "What happens if it rains?" It's a fair question, and we'd rather you have a clear rain plan now than a worry on your mind all the way to the big day.

The short version: rain doesn't have to change your wedding. It might change where you stand to say your vows, but it doesn't have to change how the day feels. Here's how our rain plan works, along with a few things that help couples feel ready for any weather.

An Outdoor Ceremony With an Indoor Backup Built In

Hopewell Chapel is a historic chapel dating back to the 1800s, and it sits right here on the property. Many couples choose to hold their ceremony outdoors by the chapel, where there's room for up to 200 guests. Inside, the chapel seats about 100.

That combination is what makes our rain plan simple. If the weather turns, you can move your outdoor ceremony into the chapel. There's no scrambling for a tent and no last-minute search for another location. Your backup is a beautiful setting in its own right, right where you'd planned to be.

You can even do a mix of both. Hopewell Chapel's doors open wide, so some guests can sit inside while others gather outside with a wonderful view of the two of you. That way, over 300 people can enjoy your ceremony.

If your guest list is larger than the chapel's indoor seating, the open-door option is a great fit, and we're happy to talk it through early. We'd much rather work through the details together during planning than on the morning of your wedding.

The Reception Barn Keeps the Celebration Going

Once you're married, the party moves to the Reception Barn. It holds about 220 guests inside, and 200–250 when you include the outdoor area. On a clear evening, guests can spill outside. On a rainy one, everyone can gather under one roof to eat, dance, and celebrate.

For couples looking for an indoor outdoor wedding venue in Mississippi, this is really the heart of it: you get the outdoor setting you're dreaming of, with indoor spaces ready if you need them.

Getting Ready at the Alva House

Rain is a lot less stressful when you have a comfortable place to be before the ceremony. Every package includes the living area and kitchen of the Alva House. Saturday and weekend packages include the full Alva House, bedrooms included, so you and your wedding party can get ready on site and wait out a passing shower together.

Peace of Mind Beyond the Weather

Weather is only one of the things that can feel uncertain when you're planning. We cover the couple's additional event insurance, so that's one less item on your to-do list and one more reason to breathe a little easier.

Practical Tips for Your Wedding Rain Plan

A few simple habits make a big difference when the sky looks uncertain:

  • Pick a weather call time. Decide in advance when you'll make the final indoor-or-outdoor decision, such as a set number of hours before the ceremony. When that time comes, make the call and let it go. Refreshing the radar won't change the sky, and a firm decision gives your vendors, your wedding party, and us time to get everything ready.

  • Build a buffer into your timeline. Add a little extra time between getting ready, photos, and the ceremony. If you need to shift locations or wait out a quick shower, that cushion keeps the day from feeling rushed.

  • Have umbrellas on hand. A handful of umbrellas for walking between the Alva House, Hopewell Chapel, and the Reception Barn helps keep everyone dry. Clear or color-coordinated umbrellas can double as photo props, too.

  • Tell your guests the plan. A simple note on your wedding website, something like "In case of rain, the ceremony will move inside Hopewell Chapel," saves guests from guessing. Suggesting comfortable shoes is a kind touch.

  • Think about footwear and layers. Grass can get soft after rain. A backup pair of shoes for you and a light wrap or jacket for a damp evening can make you much more comfortable.

  • Share the plan with your vendors. Make sure your florist, planner, musicians, and photographer know the rain plan ahead of time so they can adjust quickly if you decide to move inside.

Rain Photos Can Be Beautiful

Here's something we want every couple to hear: a rainy wedding day can make for lovely photos. Soft, overcast light is flattering. Raindrops on a window, a shared umbrella, the warm glow inside a historic chapel: those moments have a mood all their own.

Photography and videography by Colormake Weddings are available here at Alvastage Acres. Whoever you choose, talk through a few rainy-day shot ideas ahead of time so you're excited about the photos either way.

Plan for Sunshine, Be Ready for Rain

We can't promise you a blue sky. Nobody can. What we can offer is a plan you understand well before your wedding day, so whatever the weather does, you can focus on each other and the people you love.
